The Importance of Mental Health Month

by Don Laird, NCC, LPC

May is recognized as Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness about mental health issues and advocate for better education and support systems. In 2025, this month holds even more significance as we continue to navigate the lasting effects of the global pandemic, political and social polarization, and the increasing mental health challenges that affect individuals worldwide.

Mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains stigmatized and often overlooked. Mental Health Month serves as an opportunity to break these barriers, educate people, and encourage conversations about mental health in ways that reduce stigma and promote understanding. This year, the conversation is more important than ever, as many people face heightened levels of stress, worry, anxiety, and depression in a rapidly changing world.

Throughout May, organizations, communities, and individuals come together to promote resources, coping strategies, and self-care practices. Whether through social media campaigns, mental health screenings, or workplace wellness initiatives, the goal is to ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles.

This Month, we’re reminded that mental health care should be as accessible and prioritized as physical health. By fostering awareness, compassion, and support, we can build a society where mental well-being is valued and nurtured for all.
